Silicon photonics are the semiconductor integration of EIC and PIC on a silicon substrate (wafer) with complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology. On the other hand, co-packaged optics (CPO) are heterogeneous integration packaging methods to integrate the optical engine (OE) which consists of photonic ICs (PIC) and the electrical engine (EE) which consists of the electronic ICs (EIC) as well as the switch ASIC (application specific IC). The advantages of CPO are: (a) to reduce the length of the electrical interface between the OE/EE (or PIC/EIC) and the ASIC, (b) to reduce the energy required to drive the signal, and (c) to cut the latency which leads to better electrical performance. In the next few years, we will see more implementations of a higher level of heterogeneous integration of PIC and EIC, whether it is for performance, form factor, power consumption or cost. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which will celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2026, is at the forefront of building instruments for NASA missions. NASA’s mission has always been to explore the universe and our own planet Earth from space. This includes robotics missions like Voyager, which continues its journey beyond our solar system, missions to Mars and other planets, and astrophysics missions exploring stars and <a href="http://galaxies.The" target="_blank" title="galaxies.The">galaxies.The selection of NASA missions is driven by fundamental science questions, and the development of innovative instruments to answer these questions. We design and build instruments that enable precise measurements to help answer these scientific inquiries. This is a graduate course designed and developed in my department, in which we give basic advice and offer mentorship to our graduate students and post-docs. The central theme of this presentation is that succeeding in Science requires skills (often referred to as ‘soft professional skills’) beyond those needed for Science. Since January 2014 he holds the UNESCO Chair in Materials and Technologies for Energy Conversion, Saving and Storage. Since March 2023 he holds the Chair of Industrial Chemistry at the Department of Chemicaland Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Trieste. Dr. Rosei’s research interests focus on structure/property relationships in nanomaterials andtheir use as building blocks in emerging technologies. He has worked in partnership with over twenty Canadian R&D companies. Robowars is the first official robot-sumo tournament in North America recognized by the FSI - AJRST (All Japan Robot-Sumo Tournament). The competition pits sumo-bots against one another to see who can push their competitor out of the ring first. Participants are tasked with building a sumo robot capable of being active-reactive in the ring and they have to do it beforehand. This, therefore, is a perfect opportunity for students to expand and showcase their engineering skills. Indeed, the organizing team is working to attract potential recruiters to the event so students can showcase their <a href="http://talents.Robowars" target="_blank" title="talents.Robowars">talents.Robowars has been running for over 4 years! Last year's event had a Robowars record high attendance of 80 participants (25-30 teams). This year, we aim to welcome about 100 participants. However, IEEE has its lab open and offers knowledgeable lab supervisors who can help students with building their robots. Furthermore, IEEE has been expanding their reach and contacting universities from all over Canada to encourage participation in Robowars. Abstract :This talk provides an in-depth exploration into resource management within 6G wireless networks, focusing on the vision, key performance indicators (KPIs), key enabling techniques (KETs), and the diverse array of services characteristic of these advanced networks. The distinct challenges inherent in 6G's resource management call for a pivotal shift towards artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML)-driven solutions, necessitating a departure from traditional optimization-centric approaches. This talk will shed light on generative AI and unsupervised ML strategies tailored to effectively address convex and non-convex resource management optimization problems. A key focus will be on deep unsupervised learning techniques for network resource allocation, addressing non-linear and non-convex constraints. Abstract: With increased human exploration and exploitation of the seas, our oceans have become noisier than ever, driven by an increase in commercial ships by more than 50% (in terms of deadweight). In Canada, recent demands have led to a 20% increase in commercial shipping traffic and the development of new seaport infrastructures to accommodate larger commercial vessels. With broadband noise in the 50Hz-10kHz range and source levels of 150-180 dB, there is a clear need to further study the environmental impact of such noise generation. The effects of underwater radiated noise (URN) on various components of the marine ecosystem, from mussels to marine mammals, have been extensively studied in different disciplines. Responses to noise vary between: (I) audibility, (II) behavioral responses and stress reflected in altered vocalizations, (III) masking of sounds necessary for communication, localization, and foraging, (IV) physiological auditory threshold shifts, and (V) physical damage (injury) to the auditory system. Due to these effects, ship noise is considered a source of environmental pollution and should be monitored regularly through ship noise measurements. In this presentation we will discuss the impact of increasing shipping activities on the health of marine biofauna. We will learn what regulatory measures are currently being proposed to mitigate noise pollution at global, regional and local levels. We will also present the activities of our laboratory to measure, detect and assess the impact of ship noise.
